Book Character Day

Everyone looked fantastic and the amazing costumes filled up the hall during book character day assembly. All the classes went on the stage to show off our costumes. Thanks to everyone who helped make it such a fun occasion.  Please see Room 14 costumes below - we had such a great range of characters.

Book week events

See the slides below to see what's happening:

We made pikelets!!!

Today Room 14 and Toki made pikelets at school because we got a prize for filling up the pom-pom jar.

We used eggs, flour, sugar, milk, white sugar, salt and baking powder and mixed them together. After cooking them we put on butter and jam and ate them outside under the Pohutukawa tree.

Unfortunately we were so busy making and eating that we (I!!) forgot to take any photos. Please see the recipe below to make these at home.

I have given the class 'homework' which is for you to comment at home on this post.

Thanks for reading!

This week we read some Meg and Mog stories. We looked at how they were written and we had a try at writing one ourselves. Here is the slideshow with more detail:

Tae Kwon Do

Room 14 have been learning some Tae Kwon Do this term. So far we have had 4 lessons and we have 5 more lessons to go. We are really enjoying it. We have to follow instructions and listen carefully to the instructor.  Did you know Tae means foot, Kwon means fist and Do means the way of. So altogether it means the way of the fist and foot.

Here are some photos:

Kia orana - Cook Island Language week

This week we have learnt some facts and words from the Cook Islands. Did you know that the 15 stars on the Cook Island flag represent the 15 different islands of the Cook Islands?

Here is a song we learnt to help us remember how to count in Cook Island Maori. Do you notice the similarities and differences between the two languages?

We also had Hamida and some helpers talk to us about the Cook Island language and show us some instruments and dance moves.  Check out the photos below:

Making 43 and other numbers

Today we used different materials to make 43. Then we added 10, subtracted 10, added 100, to make different numbers.

Green week

This week we were learning about native NZ birds. We did some reading and writing about the Piwakawaka (Fantail). We also had a visit from Miss Best (an ex-teacher who now is a park ranger) and she put in some stuffed birds and talked about their different features. At Green Day assembly we saw what all the other classes had been learning about.

Fantails:

- Live for 3 years
- Are small (maximum 16cm)
- Get their name from the shape of their tails
- Eat insects such as flies, ants and even wasps!
